The city of Frederick began at a crossroads between Native American and Colonial routes of travel. Frederick sprang up around 1745, shortly after the nearby settlement of Monocacy was abandoned. In 1742, Frederick became the seat of Frederick County, growing to become an important center for both commerce and the justice system. During the Civil War, Frederick became Maryland’s capital for a brief time during 1861.

Today, Frederick covers nearly 60 square miles and is home to a population of more than 65,000. It is Maryland’s second largest city, and a major cultural center, home to the Frederick Arts Council, the Maryland Ensemble Theatre, and the Frederick Symphony Orchestra.
